Judd Trump maintains two-frame lead over Ali Carter in Crucible showdown

JUDD Trump is closing in on a quarter-final place at this year's Betfred.com World Championship.

The Bristol potter and world No 2, last year's beaten finalist, trailed 5-3 overnight to Ali Carter, but fought back to establish a 9-7 lead ahead of the concluding session of the best-of-25 frames duel.

The 22-year-old left-hander needs to win four of a possible nine frames in today's concluding session to keep his hopes alive of pocketing the £250,000 top prize.

Victory would also see a meeting with either one of two qualifiers, Welshman Jamie Jones or Andrew Higginson, from Widnes.

A fine 120 break saw Trump kick-off the penultimate afternoon session with a bang – and this season's UK Championship winner needed a further 28 minutes to level matters by pinching a scrappy tenth frame.

Tiptree cueman Carter, the 2008 Crucible runner-up, responded with a gutsy 112 break, slamming in the final black with an angry look on his face. There's certainly no love lost between the pair with Carter having been critical of Trump in some his post-match press conferences.

But Trump held his nerve and was soon all-square again thanks to a break of 43 in the next frame, which took the players in to their mid-session interval.

However, it was Trump who returned the better after the break and he went ahead for the first time in the match thanks to a break of 80.

A break of 60 followed as Trump edged 8-6 in front to leave Carter with plenty to ponder.

World No 17 Carter hit back with a break of 57 to steal the 15th frame after Trump had missed his chance to pull further ahead having failed to take advantage of a break of 37 and in among the balls.

But the Whitchurch cueman made sure he took a welcome two-frame lead with him into the final session of the match. Growing in confidence having overcome bad food poisoning which nearly forced to him to pull out of the tournament on the morning of his first-round match with Welshman Dominic Dale, Trump finished in style with a 79 break.

The job is not done, but the two-time ranking event winner looks more like his usual self – and the long pots are starting to fly in just at the right time.

Meanwhile, triple world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan established a commanding 11-5 lead over Mark Williams.

The Rocket resumed 5-3 up on Welshman Williams, but wasted no time in producing his vintage best as he cruised into a deserved eight-frame lead, which leaves him needing just two frames to progress to the next stage.

Williams, the double world champion, was left shell-shocked and spent most of the afternoon glued to his seat as O'Sullivan reeled off six frames on the spin. But he at least spared himself the ignominy of losing with a session to spare by winning one frame of the penultimate session, although defeat is surely around the corner when the two green-baize heavyweights resume tonight to conclude their best-of-25 frames duel.

Having won the final three frames of the opening session from 3-2 behind with breaks of 86 and 48, O'Sullivan made it a combined nine frames on the bounce with breaks of 107, 74, 51, 68, 128 and 93.

It was exhilarating potting from the sport's greatest entertainer.

Williams rallied with a spirited 86 break to prevent himself losing with a session to spare.

And the world No 4 pinched the last frame of the session to give himself a glimmer of hope but, barring a remarkable comeback, it looks like O'Sullivan, chasing his first Crucible title since 2008, will be playing Australian Neil Robertson in the next round.

DC Misunderstands Immigration Debate

Scott Rasmussen, DC Examiner
As the U.S. Supreme Court wrestles with the Obama administration's challenge of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration, the overall issue of immigration remains misunderstood by both political parties in Washington. Many Washington Republicans confuse voter opposition to illegal immigration with opposition to all immigration. Their remarks often contain an ugly tone toward those who want to come to America.

Social TV highlights from the MTV upfront

Posted by Natan Edelsburg on April 26, 2012

A packed Beacon Theater in NYC enjoyed a fun MTV upfront that highlighted a slew of new and returning programing built for a Twitter and Facebook generation. The presentation started off highlighting that MTV both broke a Twitter record with Beyonce at the VMAs, has over 100 million viewers and 100 million Facebook likes (as we learned earlier this week from President Stephen Friedman) and has been covered as the number one social TV network. Here?s how social TV will play an even bigger part of MTV?s programming and initiatives for the next year.

Teen Wolf embraces social TV further with scripted social TV game:

For the new season of the hit scripted series Teen Wolf, MTV is launching a new social experience on June 4th. Here?s the announcement from MTV:

MTV also highlighted its ?storytelling without borders? strategy that looks to engage audiences across every platform as demonstrated through ?Teen Wolf: The Hunt.? The new ?Teen Wolf? social experience will live on Facebook and other platforms and will allow fans to ?friend? and interact with the show?s characters in real time within the context of a choose-your-own-adventure mystery. ?Teen Wolf: The Hunt? will feature a completely original storyline, written by the ?Teen Wolf? team of writers, while also serving as a complementary online experience to the television series. The multi-platform experience will launch on Monday, June 4, the night of the show?s regular time period debut. This initiative follows last month?s news that MTV is leading the industry after surpassing 100 million Facebook ?likes.?

As Friedman told us, ?since the show went off the air the fan base increased 50%.? This is a smart way to continue to grow and activate those fans.

Social media documentary ?Catfish? to become a series:

Around the same time that ?The Social Network? took off, a documentary called ?Catfish? emerged chronicling Yaniv Schulman discovering he?s been hoaxed in a Facebook relationship when he finally meets the person in real life. In the series, Schulman will now chronicle others in his situation.

New programming and projects:

A reoccurring theme besides new Jersey Shore spinoffs was millennial underemployment for the fame obsessed generation. ?Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous,? starring internet celebrity Bo Burnham is a YouTube show meets a mockureality series, where Zach wants to use social media to become famous instead of going to college.

The second with this theme, ?Underemployed,? executive producer Craig Wright is a scripted series about the reality of the new economy that the spoiled generation finds themselves in. I?m skeptical that this generation actually wants to watch content about their plight, but both look funny and tweetable.

Remember Hollywood Squares from back in the day? Rapper Fat Joe came to present that the network is launching ?Hip Hop Squares? on MTV 2. It looks amazing and includes contestants like Nick Cannon and Vinny from Jersey Shore.

They also announced a new social game, around the election encourage MTV?s audience to register to vote and bring back the magic from 2008. Here?s the announcement:

MTV ?Power of 12? correspondent Andrew Jenks was joined by Liddy Huntsman, daughter of former Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, Jr., to talk about the network?s new ?Fantasy Election ?12? game, which will launch this summer.

The coming year for MTV:

With the Movie Awards nearing and the VMAs also in the not too distant future it?s going to be a big year for MTV, with social components continuing to be the centerpiece for their brands and programming.

2012 Jerez MotoGP FP1 Result: Silva Tops Session Lost To Rain

The weather moved in to disrupt the first session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Jerez, causing almost the entire session to be lost. The session started with just a few drops of rain, making the track greasy, but not really wet. The conditions meant that there was nothing to be learned going out, and much to be lost: too dry to get any useful wet setup data, too wet to get any useful dry setup data, and just slick enough to increase the risk of crashing and injuring yourself. Only in the final ten minutes did the rain start to get heavier, making the track wet enough to make it worth going out.

The conditions left Ivan Silva on top of the timesheets, as the Avintia Blusens rider was the only man who did have something to learn. The Spaniard ran back-to-back tests on the new Inmotec carbon fiber chassis, comparing it to the aluminium FTR chassis currently being used by teammate Yonny Hernandez. Stefan Bradl ended the session in 2nd, posting some impressive times on a fully wet track, while Randy de Puniet secured 3rd spot after venturing out early, when the track was still dry.

Homes made fit for another thirty years

TENANTS of council homes in Bristol with "concrete cancer" have seen repairs get underway.

Some 400 defective homes in Sea Mills, Lawrence Weston, Henbury and Lockleaze are being refurbished under a programme being led by Bristol City Council, which will be complete by February 2014 and aims to make the homes fit for at least another 30 years of use.

The PRC (pre-cast reinforced concrete) properties are defective because the steel frames which were used to build them have corroded.

The council had wanted to tear down most of the homes and rebuild them but changed its mind in 2009.

City councillor Simon Rayner (Lib Dem, Kingsweston) said the fate of PRC homes had been the biggest issue in his ward.

He said: "It's an important moment for the communities in Sea Mills and Lawrence Weston because both areas have been blighted by the threat of demolition. I'm quite proud to have played a role in stopping that.

"It's taken a while to come up with a new solution and it's good to see that's really moving forward."
