NAILSEA'S Air Training Corp could be granted freedom of the town to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
A local resident has written to Nailsea Town Council asking it to consider bestowing the honour on the Air Training Corp (ATC) after it was shortlisted as a finalist in a competition to find the best aid cadet group in the country.
The squadron, based at Greenfield Crescent, has been chosen as the Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing representative for the Lees Trophy, an annual award presented to the best air cadet group in the UK.
The resident, who has not been named, said: "Next year the ATC celebrates its 50th anniversary.
"It has been suggested that as a token of thanks to the squadron they be offered the freedom of the town of Nailsea in recognition for all their hard work and dedication to the youth and people of Nailsea."
This is the first time the town council has been asked to consider granting the freedom of the town to a local organisation and the policy committee is due to discuss the request on May 30.
Town clerk Ian Morrell said consideration of the criteria of who could and who couldn't be put forward would need to be considered.
Mr Morrell said: "What the implications for the town are would have to be defined and the council has some interesting discussion ahead."
In recent years legislation has been introduced that permits a town council to confer the honour of freedom of the town.
Freedom of a city or borough dates back to mediaeval times and traditionally allowed the recipient to enjoy privileges such as the right to trade and own property as well as protection within the town. Nowadays it is solely a ceremonial honour.
Approximately 60 teenagers belong to the Nailsea squadron.
