You made it special for every one of us

IT was truly the day when Bristol took the Olympic flame to its heart. For many it meant a very early start getting up at the crack of dawn. For others a long wait beside a road in the morning sun. Some were old enough to have remembered the last time the Olympics came to London.

For others held in their parents' arms seeing the torch through infant eyes it will be a memory to be rekindled in later years by snapshots.

But everyone who turned out yesterday to watch, welcome, applaud and cheer did so in the best possible spirit.

If ever there could have been a true example of the Olympic Games uniting people from all different backgrounds then this was it.

Bristol and the surrounding area has not seen crowds on the streets like this for many a long year and certainly never before to focus on a single flame.

There were no celebrities carrying our torch but in truth they were all celebrities.

We cheered every one and every one of them beamed with pleasure and pride. This was our Olympic moment and we all revelled in it.

So to all of our torch bearers, well done. You played your part in making it a day to remember for people of all ages.

You each had a taste of Olympic glory and you all helped to bring the Games closer to each of us.
